Where Louisiana stands today
Online and retail sports betting is legal in 55 of Louisiana's 64 parishes, with online wagering live since January 2022. Nine parishes opted out, and operators use geolocation to enforce parish boundaries.
Retail casino gambling is robust. Caesars New Orleans is the state's only land-based casino, rebranded from Harrah's in May 2024. Sweepstakes casinos: deemed illegal here
On July 2, 2025, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill issued an opinion finding that dual-currency sweepstakes casinos (Gold Coins plus redeemable Sweeps Coins) are illegal gambling under La. R.S. 14:90. In June 2025, the LGCB sent more than 40 cease-and-desist letters, and major brands exited the state.
To be precise, sweepstakes casinos are not real-money online casinos. Their model lets users redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for cash prizes only where permitted, which differs from licensed real-money gambling. In Louisiana, the AG has deemed that dual-currency model illegal. As a result, the major dual-currency sweepstakes operators are not available to Louisiana players, and several pulled their Louisiana Sweeps Coins redemption entirely rather than risk enforcement.
